Moscow: 43 New Metro Stations by 2015

Moscow is investing heavily in its transport infrastructure to finally get traffic and congestion problems in the Russian capital under control. By 2015, 43 new metro stations are to be added to the city’s transport network.

The construction of 43 new metro stations by 2015 was announced by Moscow’s first deputy mayor, Vladimir Resin, in a conversation with the press. As part of the plan, the Moscow metro network is to be extended farther into the suburbs and outlying districts. In addition to the new subway stations, a total of 79 kilometers of new tracks will be laid.

An initial plan is to be presented by the end of the year. It concerns a project for an above-ground railway that will run to the suburb of Zelenograd. Of the 43 new stations on the Moscow metro , 27 are to be built above ground.

With this announcement to expand Moscow’s rail network by 43 stations and 79 kilometers of track, the plans of the Moscow city government have even been surpassed. Last November, Sergei Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, had spoken of expanding the rail network by more than 50 kilometers. At the same time, he announced that around 50 billion rubles (about 1.2 billion euros) would be made available for the construction work. The plans for the Moscow metro also include rebuilding the “Small Railway Ring.” The plans of Moscow’s city leaders could provide a solution to the traffic problems that residents and tourists alike are still struggling with.
